Yearlong
Safey Dog Rescue was inspired by a small white Chihuahua that i named Safey.
One day I was looking at the paper and saw an ad for an older Chihuahua for sale,
now normally I DO NOT even call on those ads but I decided to that day and was
so blown away by the lady on the other end that i had to go and see the dog.
I was told on the phone that the reason why she was getting rid of her was because
she could no longer make any money on her and that she was all bred out.
I could not believe that this lady was so outspoken and cold hearted about this poor little girl.
When i showed up I was amazed to see 130 chihuahuas and the smell was horrifying
and it almost knocked you over once you came in the door. What I saw that day I will never forget,
cages and crates stacked on top of one another and they were filthy with feces and urine
and out back were so many dogs trying to get my attention and jumping up at me.
It took this lady over 30 minutes to find this little dog and when she did my heart broke,
i saw this little emaciated white dog that was shivering trying to stay warm on a pot holder
and when she held her up all she did was stiffen up as to not be used to human touch.
I took her of course and paid the lady $75.00 for this precious girl. I know that
there are rescuers out there that would disagree with what i did but I knew
that I couldn't live with myself if I left her there so i took her.
It took me 3 baths to get most of the smell off and poor thing would not move.
I named her Safey because she was finally safe with us and she would never have to
worry about anything ever again. One day after i dropped Safey off at the vets to get spayed,
even at 10 I think they should be spayed for their health even though I was told
she was 5 years old (yeah right) i got a phone call from my vet saying that she had cancer,
which was brought on by mammary tumors due to the over breeding. My heart broke!
this poor thing was finally free and now had to go thru all of this so of course we did the surgery
which involved spaying, mammary tumor removal, all of her teeth exept for 5 had to be pulled,
ear mites, and trimming her poor nails that had grown into her paw pads. But i have to admit
that the worst thing was finding out that this poor thing had been debarked. I was so angry,
puppy millers do that to these sweet dogs so they don't have to listen to them bark all day long
and usually it is by shoving a pipe down their throat and rupturing their vocal chords
(anything to save a buck so they aren't out any of their profit).
After the surgery she came around so much and would love on you and sit in your lap
and was part of our family. We knew that the day would come when her quality of life
was no longer healthy and we would have to make the decision to let her go
and that day came on October 21st of 2005 after only 6 short months of freedom.
It was the hardest decision I ever had to make but i knew that she was no longer happy
and living a good life.
The lady that I got her from called herself a "hobby"breeder but in my opinion she was a puppy mill
and for those of you that dont know what that is just go to www.puppymillrescue.com
and see for yourself what these poor things have to go thru in life. If you buy a dog from a pet store
you are getting one of these dogs that are forced to breed over and over until they are no longer needed,
living their lives in cages with little if no veterinarian care at all. There is little you can do
to shut these people down except STOP buying from them.
If you are looking for a dog please try a rescue group or go to your local pound,
there are dogs that are killed daily simply because there is not enough room for them at the pound.
I rescue the dogs that are getting ready to be put to sleep for either lack of space
or for a simple case of kennel cough. I dont do specific breed rescue just small ones
but somehow most of them end up being Chihuahuas and that is fine with me.
I think Safey is pointing them in my direction from above :)
Please open your heart and home to a homeless animal that is just looking
for a lifelong companion and a warm place to live and endless hugs and kisses
and I promise you you will be rewarded over and over.
